The Lake
Poems From The Prompt Part 6
This poem is based on an image prompt from Alicia
Rush of water
A drowned scream
Thrashing limbs
Submerged in a fluid mirror
Pulled far away from those I love
Though they never loved me
—
Lost under waves
Rushed beyond reach
Choking on fluid mirror
Sinking down
Beneath the flow
I see a face
—
Calling out to me
In a sing-song way
“Come here my child”
“Don't let the mirror choke”
“You should come to us”
“We will never let you go”
It looks out from a window
Of a old forgotten boat
—
My gasps for air
Seem to calm
I can breathe again
Despite the fluid mirror
Trying to cut through my skin
Like an unforgiving wind
I swim to the face
Finding it easy
So long as I swim towards
It's beckoning voice
—
I search for a place
To make it to the face
I find a hole
In the hole of the boat
I hear the face
Calling my name
I feel uneasy in my dread
I do not turn back
Knowing if I do
The face will make me regret
—
I come to the room
Where the face calls my name
I see it there
Hanging from a frame
Still unmovably calling my name
It only has one eye
Covering its entire face
Unblinking it says through a means I know not
“Place your hand upon my brother's old frame”
“So that we can hang upon this wall”
“Until they dredge this lake”
—
I do as I’m told
Knowing that if I don’t
My fate will be too
Drowned in this lake
—
As time flows by
Faces morph
Bodies shatter
The fluid mirror
Far above
—
More frames are made
Slowly filling up
Because no one ever bothers
To dredge the lake

The last line got me! A great response to the prompt👍
